PRIVATE BATH, Brookline, MA (Summer 2001). Interior decoration by Uniquely Lara. After-photo courtesy of Mike Rizza.

The changes made to the bath are simple, but as dramatic as those made to the kitchen.

The bathroom retains the original pedestal sink bearing a stamped patent date of "Nov. 4 1902" and a pedestal tub, the latter a rare example of a transitional shape between the clawfoot and platform tubs. Prior to redecoration, the room had been done in a monochromatic scheme. The beige, pin-striped wallpaper and trimwork, the beige-painted tub and wall tile, and the beige tile floor offered nothing but a lackluster space.

Manually scraping the paint from the wall tile revealed original subway tile, cream-colored with a beautiful, lustrous and crackled glaze. A fresh cornflower blue for the walls accents the white plumbing fixtures, the trimwork, and tile, thereby creating a cheerful ambiance. The maroon chosen for the tub exterior and accessories both complements the blue and picks up the mahogany of the door. The wallpaper border along the crown moulding reiterates the color unit. With its garlands of Nantucket roses, the border not only raises the perceived height of the room but also recalls both the locale and elegance of early twentieth-century Beaux Arts.
